About the exhibition:
John Isiah Walton: Color Coded
Seven Years of Black Paintings 2016-2023
Main Gallery Exhibition, February 11, 2023 – May 13, 2023
This exhibition is a survey of works created between 2016 and 2023 in Walton’s series of “Black Paintings.” Emerging from a common vein as the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, these works are a complex reflection on the artist’s personal experiences as a native New Orleanian and Black American male. Walton’s paintings engage in a dialogue about the contemporary moment on a variety of topics, including Black identity, computer culture, social media, pop culture, and New Orleans as a messy—but beautiful—heritage destination. This will be Walton’s largest solo exhibition to-date, showcasing nearly 100 original works.
