For teachers of grades 2–4 and English Language Learners

Using a kinesthetic approach to language, this workshop brings language arts to life. Warming up with action verbs and modifying the action with adverbs relates to the way dancers tune up and create with their instrument – the body. Concrete nouns are expressed as body shapes, adjectives modify those shapes and a prepositional phrase adds a spatial relationship. By embodying these parts of speech, we find parallels between creating good descriptive writing and creating good choreography. We progress from writing simple Cinquain poems about dance elements to using choreography to inspire creative writing. Participants will collaborate to create expressive, descriptive dance/spoken word performances that serve as a springboard for noticing deeply and for communicating orally, kinesthetically and through writing.
