A Little Lagniappe: Erin Gray

June 10, 2026

Summertime holds a special place in my heart, in ways I never thought were possible. Looking back, my summers as a kid were filled with eating watermelon, drinking from the water hose, attending soccer camps, going on beach trips and getting some seriously nasty sunburns. This summer, well I’ll still be eating watermelon, going on a beach trip, drinking water (though perhaps not from a hose), watching the World Cup, and applying way more sunscreen, but I’ll also get to see kids come alive through the arts.

Each summer I get to look forward to arts camps at the AcA, where it becomes a vibrant space that allows imagination and creativity to find a stage for young artists. There really is something so special about getting to experience a child discover a new passion for the very first time. Whether it’s creating a piece of art they can’t wait to show their friends and families, or finding the confidence to perform for an audience for the very first time, summer arts camps (I may be biased, but specifically the ones here at the AcA) provide opportunities for growth and expression that are truly immeasurable.

I can’t help but think back to last year. We had a “Spotlight to Success” camp, built for young aspiring stars, that concluded in a final talent showcase. Let me tell you, the kids that first walked in on Monday morning were not the same ones that left the building on Friday afternoon! Over the course of just one week, we were able to witness shy introductions turn into confident performances. New friendships formed during rehearsals, creative ideas came to life, and these kids discovered talents that just needed to be ignited. On showcase day parents, siblings, friends, and even the AcA staff filled the audience, cheering as each camper stepped into the spotlight.

What made the experience so special wasn’t just the singing, dancing, acting, performing, etc… It was the growth that happened along the way. They learned to encourage each other, take creative risks, and build courage to believe in themselves. The memories made that week are ones we still cherish, and they continue to inspire us as we look forward to another summer.

As camp season approaches, I’m reminded that some of our most treasured memories come from trying something new. Just as I remember the adventures and silly moments that shaped my childhood, I hope that this year’s campers create their own memories they can carry with them for years to come.
