Let Culture Lead

BUILD

OUR CULTURE with new developments that seed future growth in the arts

As an arts facility and placemaking project, the AcA has brought considerable investment and revitalization to the cultural heart of Acadiana, but there are still many ‘missing teeth’ in the smile of Lafayette.

In this pathway, the AcA will foster new ventures like the Louisiana Music Museum, the AcA will create visionary spaces that honors the culture of this place, while drawing new attention and engagement to the region.

We envision Lafayette as a place that is recognized nationally for providing a vibrant and culturally inclusive experience for visitors.

My work recently brought me to music festivals in California and Oregon. Thousands danced to Geno Delafose, Steve Riley, and other musicians who cut their teeth at this place they still call home. Dancers stood in long lines for plates of crawfish boiled by a vendor in Opelousas. They packed a tent where a Lafayette chef gave lessons on stirring up an alligator andouille sauce piquante. Their satisfied faces and dancing feet signaled their joy. But their words were often unsettling – “We love zydeco. We love Cajun food. We can’t wait to come to New Orleans.”

We love the Crescent City too, but so much Louisiana richness comes from right under our feet. Musicians, chefs and artisans help set the record straight, but they can’t do it alone.

If a visitor or new local asks where’s the good food, music, art or a place to parle français, what will you say? If the dance hall you would have recommended is out of business, or your favorite musician is sick and needs charity, why is that? Some visitors have moved here because of the answers they hear and see. Others move on to New Orleans.

It is important to build our culture with new projects like the Louisiana Music Museum because, if we don’t do it, someone else will.

With transformational support, your investment will launch and expand key projects that will cement Lafayette’s role as an engaging and culturally rich destination:

Lousiana Music Museum

Telling the stories of Louisiana’s musical people and places and the mark they have left upon the world.

Lafayette Arts District

A marketing cooperative of cultural business and nonprofits growing their statue with residents and visitors alike.

Public Art Network

A collaborative effort to guide and create new murals and public art in the heart of Lafayette.

Pathway Goal: $5 Million

It takes a flock.

Let Culture Lead is an initiative that benefits from AcA’s long-standing strategic partners, without which this work would not be possible.
