A time and place that gave rise to middle-class participation in arts and culture, and led to a popular new trend of average folks learning how to play instruments, for the distinct purpose of performing at home with their friends and family.

Hence, the “salon” was born. To accommodate this changing demand, some of the greatest musical minds of the time, including Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, began composing chamber music, which was better suited for smaller settings.
